I have to admit my favorite birds are the ones with vibrant colors or sing a beautiful song. I am sure I am not alone in that line of thinking but some birds just don’t have much to offer in the way of spectacular plumage or a songbird type of voice.
One such bird which gets very little attention and respect is the turkey vulture, natures undertaker. A very common bird but one which a lot of bird enthusiasts overlook, myself included, because of the dull attire it wears and it dining habits.
The turkey vulture has rarely given me opportunities to photograph it even thought is is very common. Admittedly, the few times opportunities arise I just couldn’t find a way to make them glamorous. But would it be fair if I could?
While out looking for a much more sought after bird, the burrowing owl, I came across this turkey vulture. It seemed like a great day to capture it with the low clouds and ominous feel in the air with pending storms on the horizon.
It was such an odd moment photographing this bird, one who thrives on the misfortune of other animals in nature. No brilliant colors. No vibrant song to sing. Just me and him on a dark and cloudy day. It’s one day I will never forget.
