Catching animals in most unusual poses is part of the fun of outdoor photography with wildlife. This drake northern shovelor is a good example of this. Although the picture does have good color and composition it is the unique position of the duck which I find makes the photograph. The male shovelor is standing on one leg while it is feeding, something I have not really noticed or seen before like this. They typically move around while dabbling at the surface and straining out microorganisms with the filters on the side of their beaks. What brought him to stand in such a position I will never know but I like it and I am glad he did.
