I will admit I love owls. I am not an expert regarding them but I do love watching them when the opportunities arise and I love photographing them.
Yesterday I went out in search of owls. Any type of owl would suit my needs but I knew I would find two species, the burrowing owl and a short eared owl. I came across plenty of both but I focused on the burrowing owls the most as I have not had many opportunities to photograph them.
My quest for a great bird portrait begins with the background. I hope for something smooth and subtle that doesn’t take away from the bird but adds to the picture. I don’t like a lot of distractions in the background if I can help it but sometimes it isn’t possible to find a smooth background when photographing birds.
These shots of a burrowing owl on a fence post are a great representation of the backgrounds I try to capture when photographing birds. Soft and subtle, almost canvas-like in a way. It takes time and patience to photograph birds and even more so when looking for the perfect background that enhances the shot.
